Quality Control / Distribution

DigiTagTM License Plate Digitizer (LPD)

Quality control is a key area of concern for any license plate production facility and for Motor Vehicle agencies.  Relying on visual inspection, pre-numbered envelopes, manual sorting and matching creates a greater risk for error, not to mention the inordinate amount of man-hours consumed in the process.  Because of this, Wald recommends a higher level of quality control to provide a more consistent product, reduce mistakes, and facilitate re-makes before shipment at the tag plant level and to provide a streamlined process downstream for direct mail and over-the-counter issuance at the Motor Vehicle agency level.  The DigiTagTM License Plate Digitizer system (LPD) is designed to provide digital verification of plate production to assist with quality control, flag re-makes, create barcode labels for plates, boxes and pallets, print envelopes on demand, and provide production verification after each plate is made.  The LPD is composed of a conveyorized system with a digital camera which captures an image of each license plate that is produced.  Software on the system utilizes optical character recognition (OCR) technology to “read” each license plate number and create a digital record of the plate’s production.

With the DigiTagTM LPD system in place, each license plate is optically scanned at the end of the production process.  Rejected plates are scanned to automatically create re-make reports on the DigiTagTM system.  All plate sizes (4x7 or 6x12) and styles (embossed or flat) can be scanned by the LPD.  Mis-made plate numbers, duplicates, and missing numbers are automatically detected by the system and the operator is alerted before the plate can be shipped.  As all plates would be scanned a documented record of every plate’s production is maintained for complete and accurate historical production reporting.

In addition to quality control, the LPD facilitates a variety of on-demand, computer-driven packaging options designed to reduce manual sorting and human error during the packaging of license plates.  These options include: automatic placement of unique barcode labels on each license plate (front or back), on-demand envelope printing (with barcode), and box content verification and bar-coded labeling system.  A barcode to be printed on each envelope and box can be used downstream by DMV personnel for positive verification at the time of plate issuance and distribution.  If validation stickers or forms are required, the LPD can initiate on-demand printing of these materials driven by the scan of each license plate as well.

The LPD can also be utilized to verify and record data for plates that are returned/surrendered and slated for destruction.  Scanning these plates generates historical data and greatly reduces the occurrence of unauthorized plate redistribution whether intentional or unintentional.
