Reflective Sheeting and Overlaminate

The John R. Wald Company is pleased to offer reflective sheeting materials from the Avery Dennison Corporation and Nippon Carbide (Nikkalite®).  These materials are independently tested to the ISO-7591 international standard for retro-reflective license plates and have been used successfully by numerous states and jurisdictions worldwide.  The material is available in plain white or pre-printed configurations to meet all of your license plate production requirements.  The security mark available for the materials can be customized to incorporate a state indicia or logo, as required.  The types of security marks offered are embedded in the reflective sheeting during the manufacturing process and, as such, are easily identifiable and not easily counterfeited.

  • The primary and most expensive component consumed in the production of license plates is the reflective sheeting.  We have witnessed a wide variance in pricing for the same commodity between various jurisdictions.  Historically, higher market prices for commodities are often due to one of the following common mistakes in the procurement process. Namely, these are:

    1. the procurement of equipment and commodities under a combined bid and
    2. “closed” specifications which unduly limit the commodity to a particular vendor’s patented and/or proprietary features

There are various styles of security marks available from different manufacturers, but most often these are proprietary and designed to limit competitive procurement of the commodity.  Wald recommends that the chosen mark be non-proprietary to a particular manufacturer and not capable of being easily counterfeited. The proper use of open specifications for license plate reflective sheeting is key to help provide for competitive pricing for this commodity, whether digital or traditional.
